Metro is dedicated to reducing the number of accidents, injuries and fatalities associated with red-light violations at all streets and highway rail-grade crossings. Helping ensure motorist safety and the safety of the surrounding community will be a key agency priority before, during and after the Crenshaw/LAX light rail line opens to the public.
Starting Friday, October 1, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) and the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department (LASD) will activate a photo enforcement program along the future Crenshaw/LAX light rail line to help deter motorists from disobeying traffic signals. Motorists will receive warnings for 30 days before actual citations are issued.
The enforcement program is aimed at mitigating potential train/vehicle collisions and resulting injuries and/or fatalities. The program also seeks to improve vehicular and pedestrian safety in the Crenshaw District.
Metro began intermittent train testing on Crenshaw Boulevard in December 2020. The photo enforcement program is designated to detect motorists who make illegal left-hand turns and will operate at the following 10 intersections along Crenshaw Boulevard:
- Southbound Crenshaw to 48th St East
- Southbound Crenshaw to 52nd St East
- Northbound Crenshaw to 52nd St West
- Southbound Crenshaw to 54th St East
- Northbound Crenshaw to 54th St West
- Northbound Crenshaw to 57th St West
- Southbound Crenshaw to 59th St East
- Northbound Crenshaw to 59th St West
- Southbound Crenshaw to Slauson East
- Northbound Crenshaw to Slauson West
Motorists who violate the left-hand turn traffic signal during the first 30 days of enforcement will receive a warning letter notifying them that their vehicle was photographed violating the red-light at a designated rail crossing. The warning period ends November 1, 2021.
Motorists who disobey traffic signals and operate vehicles in an illegal manner after November 1 will begin receiving traffic citations in the mail for violations at the 10 locations. Citations average around $100 and could include additional penalties and assessments.
Metro has previously implemented a photo enforcement program on its other transit lines, including the A Line (Blue), L Line (Gold), G Line (Orange), and E Line (Expo).

About Crenshaw/LAX Line
The Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project will bring 8.5-miles of new light rail extending service from Metro’s E Line (Expo) at the Expo/Crenshaw Station to Metro’s C Line (Green) at the Aviation/LAX Station. When in operation the new light rail line will have eight new stations serving the Crenshaw, Inglewood, Westchester, and LAX communities. Riders will have easier connections within the Metro Rail system, municipal bus lines, and other regional transportation services. Metro is also constructing a transit station that will connect LAX to the regional rail system. The Airport Metro Connector transit station at Aviation Bl and 96th St will provide a direct connection to LAX’s future Automated People Mover.
